Local MP Mary Macleod has called for more to be done to promote outdoor markets and high streets. Speaking at the Turnham Green Terrace market last week Mary commented: “I would encourage everyone in the local community to support markets and their local high street. We are so fortunate in Chiswick to have some amazing independent shops but they need our support.”
During a Parliamentary debate on the future of town centres and high streets earlier this month Mary highlighted the successful Turnham Green Terrace Market and stressed how important independent shops are to the local economy.
The comments come a week after the Mayor’s Office announced a £4.8 million investment to help promote Hounslow and Brentford High Streets. Mary added: “Throughout last year I visited a number of markets including the successful series trialled outside of Brentford Magistrates court. Not only are they are an important boost to the local economy but they are central to the community. That is why in months leading up to the Mayors outer London Fund decision we were eager to promote the success of such events. I am therefore pleased that part of the £4.8 million investment will go directly into providing facilities to ensure that more can take place.”
