On Tuesday 8th March, Mary Macleod MP, Member of Parliament for Brentford and Isleworth, met with other women MPs on Westminster Bridge as part of the “Join Me On The Bridge” campaign. The capaign was organised by Women for Women International, a humanitarian organisation that provides financial and emotional support to women survivors of war. The event was held to celebrate the centenary of International Women’s Day.
Launched last year, the “Join Me On The Bridge” campaign brings women (and men), across a planned 5 continents, 29 countries and 9 time zones, together in solidarity on bridges around the world – celebrating the achievements of generations of women before them while shining an international spotlight on the issues still facing women around the world.
Mary joined colleagues from both sides of the political divide, including Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Public Health, Anne Milton MP, and Shadow Secretary of State for International Development, Harriet Harman MP, on Westminster Bridge at midday. The group then proceeded to The Royal Festival Hall, where they welcomed fellow supporters on a march led by singer Annie Lennox. The march then continued over Hungerford Bridge.
Mary said, “I am proud to be part of the “Join Me On The Bridge” campaign to mark International Women’s Day. It is so important to celebrate the achievements of women around the world and keep campaigning both nationally and internationally to ensure equal opportunities for women. Women deserve the chance to aspire to and achieve what they want in life.”
