Local MP Mary Macleod has welcomed Government plans to boost local tourism and business. Mary commented: “In this vital year for UK tourism I am delighted the Government is providing real support for local businesses seeking to benefit from the surge in visitors. Locally 9.6% of people are employed in the tourism and hospitality sector so this support will make a big difference.”
The measures announced include the abolition of a number of Government regulations which were seen as placing an unnecessary burden on the industry. The Tourism Regulatory Task Force Report indentified more than 60 out of 102 Government regulations affecting the hospitality sector that will now be scrapped, merged or simplified.
In addition the Government has announced plans to get rid of the bureaucracy that discourages people from organising concerts, plays and other live entertainment. “This constituency has a proud tradition of launching up and coming artists and I am pleased that these proposed changes will remove some of the barriers facing both professional and amateur groups who want to put on concerts, plays or sporting events.”
The moves come as the Government announces a £150m campaign to market Great Britain at home and abroad. Mary added, “With London 2012 and the Diamond Jubilee approaching, this year is set to be one of the biggest the tourism and hospitality sector in London has seen. These initiatives will help local businesses maximise the opportunities on offer and ensure a positive effect on the local economy will be felt for years to come.”
