In October, Mary Macleod MP, Member of Parliament for Brentford and Isleworth, was appointed President of the Chiswick Branch of the Royal British Legion.
On Armistice Day, in her capacity as President and as local MP, Mary attended the official opening of the Chiswick War Memorial Homes (CWMH) in Burlington Lane, Chiswick. The homes, whose residents include two Victoria Cross recipients, have recently been re-furnished and extended by The Sir Oswald Stoll Foundation (SOSF), a Fulham-based charity which houses and supports disabled and vulnerable ex-Servicemen and women.
The opening was attended by HRH The Countess of Wessex (the Patron of SOSF) who, together with Mary, toured the facilities offered by CWMH and met some of the residents. They got to hear first-hand about the impressive achievements of the ex-servicemen, and received a traditional Hindu welcome in the home of a former Gurkha.
On Remembrance Sunday, Mary attended the annual Remembrance Service at Chiswick Town Hall. Cllr Paul Lynch, Chairman of the Chiswick Branch of the Royal British Legion, made a short speech about baby Tommy Hollis, who died in a tragic accident just outside the Town Hall. The party then proceeded to the War Memorial on Chiswick High Road, where Mary and others laid a wreath of poppies. This was followed by a Service of Remembrance at Christ Church, Turnham Green.
Mary said, “I was honoured to lay a wreath on Remembrance Sunday for the many who have given their lives for their country. It is a sacrifice that we must never forget or take for granted. It was also very moving to remember baby Tommy and to meet his parents. We will remember them.”
