Mary Macleod, MP for Brentford & Isleworth, has been named Road Safety Parliamentarian of the Month by the charity Brake for her work campaigning to improve safety on the A316, after a student from Chiswick School was seriously injured.
The student suffered head injuries when he was hit by a vehicle wing mirror whilst waiting at a bus stop on 11th October this year. He spent days in a medically induced coma due to his injuries, before being allowed home. The incident sparked a local campaign for improvements to the road led by Mary and James Whiting, Deputy Head at Chiswick School. Mary wrote to Transport for London (TfL) expressing her concerns about the threat of fast traffic to people on foot and demanded a review of safety.
Following Mary’s letter, TfL reviewed safety on the A316 and agreed the bus stop at which Christopher was injured was badly placed, putting waiting pedestrians in danger and noted traffic was travelling too fast. They agreed to move the bus stop so pedestrians would not have to wait too close to traffic.
Mary said “I am delighted to accept this award and hope injuries like Christopher’s will be avoided following the repositioning of the bus stop on the A316. I applaud the work Brake does in campaigning to prevent road deaths and injuries; such work is vital to our safety, day in day out.”
