West London MP Mary Macleod has written to Heathrow Chief Executive Colin Matthews and British Airway’s Willie Walsh to register her disappointment that a local Remembrance Day Service in Hounslow was interrupted by a loud, low flying British Airways plane during the 2 minute silence.
The Brentford and Isleworth MP’s letter to Mr Matthews reads:
I recently attended a Remembrance Day commemoration on Sunday 11th November at the Holy Trinity Church Hounslow, in my constituency.
During the two minute silence, a British Airways plane flew directly over the service, interrupting what would have been a rare and quiet moment of respect and contemplation for those who died serving our country.
I would be really grateful if for these events you could find a way of working with the airlines to minimise the disruption caused to residents in the future.
In his reply, Mr Matthews apologised, saying Heathrow had ‘let her down’.
Mr Walsh, Chief Executive of the airline British Airways, has yet to respond.
Mary commented, “My residents have planes flying over every 90 seconds. 30% of people affected by aircraft noise across the whole of Europe live under the Heathrow flightpaths. This is a total of 725,000 local residents in west London. Surely, on one Sunday in the year, for just two minutes, local residents could have some peace to remember those who have given their lives for this country.”
