Local MP Mary Macleod has held a fundraising coffee morning at her home to mark the 40th anniversary of domestic violence charity Refuge. Tracing its roots back to a single house in Chiswick, Refuge is now the biggest single provider of emergency accommodation and specialist support for women and children fleeing domestic violence.
Supporters around the country held fundraising events to raise awareness and funds for the charity. Mary commented: “Refuge are an organisation that do so much good work nationally and locally so I was delighted to join in and host an event to mark this important anniversary.
“Domestic violence is a serious issue locally that is too often hidden away. Having opened the world’s first women’s refuge in Chiswick in 1971 they have continued to provide much needed help, advice and shelter for the victims of domestic violence over the last 40 years.
“It’s easy to organise an event to support Refuge’s 40th anniversary, and a great way to gather friends together to support this excellent charity. I hope that other people locally who may like to organise an event visit Refuge.org.uk and show their support.”
The anniversary comes as Mary continues her campaign to give greater priority to domestic violence victims seeking emergency accommodation. Mary commented: “Victims of domestic violence are currently given one of the lowest levels of priority when it comes to the allocation of housing. As we reflect on the good work carried out by Refuge I urge Hounslow council to rethink their policy on this issue and give domestic violence victims, and their children, a higher priority than they are currently afforded.”
