Brentford and Isleworth MP Mary Macleod has written to the Education Secretary to ask for a review of the way teachers are paid in London.

Currently, teachers employed in ‘Outer London’ get paid less than teachers employed within ‘Inner London’. Outer London teachers can expect to receive between £25,623 and £35,823, whilst Inner London teachers between £27,545 and £37,119. For example, the London Borough of Hounslow is counted as ‘Outer London’, whilst neighbouring Ealing is considering ‘Inner London’.

Mary said:

“I think it is absurd that teachers in my constituency are paid less than those just up the road in Ealing. This makes it a lot harder for schools to recruit the best teachers too, as they are more likely to want to work within the Inner London payscale. The cost of living in London is higher wherever you live, so the current model does seem outdated”.

“I wrote to the Education Secretary, Nicky Morgan, to ask her to look at this situation, including specifically the situation in Hounslow. I see no reason why teachers in the Borough should be paid less than teachers elsewhere”.
