Brentford and Isleworth MP Mary Macleod has welcomed the Mayor of London’s announcements of £5 million to create the first London-wide service to help victims of domestic violence.The news comes after Mary hosted a summit in Chiswick, the site of the world’s first women’s refuge, which was attended by the Home Secretary, Rt Hon. Theresa May MP.

Reports of domestic and sexual violence are increasing across the country as more victims gain the confidence to come forward. Conviction rates however, are still extremely low – 12% below the national average. The new pan-London service will help victims to navigate the criminal justice system, as well as supporting their recovery.

Mary said:

“Following my London Domestic Abuse Summit in Chiswick, the home to the first refuge in the world, it is excellent to hear that a new £5m Pan-London Domestic Violence Service has been announced by the Mayor. It will make a real difference to the lives of domestic abuse victims.

It is important that we all say very loudly and clearly that domestic abuse should not be tolerated and will not end until we all work together to protect victims and bring justice to those who perpetrate this horrific crime”.

Next Thursday, Mary will be also leading a backbench business debate in Parliament on violence against women and girls as part of the House of Common’s recognition of International Women’s Day, which falls on Sunday 8th March.
